1) If you live in the US, call your Senators and Representatives and Senators and tell them this is unacceptable. Note that the Senate must approve many Cabinet appointments, this is not one of them, but they still need to hear from us: http://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/
*Just to clarify: The Senate confirms the Cabinet. The Senate does not confirm the President’s Chief of Staff or any of his senior advisors other than the economic council. That doesn’t mean they can’t speak out.
2) Paul Ryan is feigning ignorance again. Call his office at (202) 225-3031 and let him know that this is not ok. Same with Majority Leader McConnell, (202) 224-2541
3) Call out the media when they report the Bannon appointment as a straight news story or refer to him as a “Breitbart executive” or a “provocateur,” but don’t call him what he is: a white supremacist, anti-Semite, and misogynist. Don’t let them normalize.
4) Where protests are ongoing, make this a focus, with signs, chants, etc.
5) Reach out to any groups you know that might join this effort, from religious groups to community organizations.
6) Contact other people of influence–College presidents, high-profile coaches and anyone else who has a public megaphone — and ask them to speak out against Bannon’s appointment.
7) Sign and share this petition from the Southern Poverty Law Center: https://www.splcenter.org/stephen-bannon-has-no-business-white-house
Senator Jeff Merkley on Bannon
“There should be no sugarcoating the truth here: Donald Trump just invited a white nationalist into the highest reaches of the government. Bannon has boasted that he made Breitbart News ‘the platform for the alt-right,’ which is the politically correct term for the resurrection of white nationalism.
“Under Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart News created news sections such as ‘Black Crime’ and compared the work of Planned Parenthood to the Holocaust. Under his leadership, Breitbart News ran this headline following the massacre of nine church-goers at an African American church in Charleston: ‘Hoist it high and proud: The Confederate flag proclaims a glorious heritage.’ He called conservative commentator Bill Kristol a ‘renegade Jew.’ Steve Bannon bears substantial responsibility for the open and disgusting acts of hatred that are sweeping across our nation.
“After running a campaign built on inciting divisions and hate, Donald Trump has claimed he wants to unite America. Yet he has done nothing meaningful to stop the wave of hate crimes and hate speech he has unleashed, and now has brought that strategy right into the Oval Office.
“Donald Trump needs to forcefully denounce the hateful actions and efforts to intimidate people that some of his supporters are undertaking and rescind the appointment of Steve Bannon.”
More Democrats need to follow Senator Merkley’s lead.
JVP on Steve Bannon
On the choice of White Supremacist, Anti-Semitic, Islamophobe Stephen Bannon as chief strategist
On Sunday November 13, President-elect Donald Trump announced Stephen Bannon, executive chairman of Breitbart News as his choice for chief strategist in the White House. Jewish Voice for Peace offers the following statement for publication:
Rabbi Alissa Wise, Jewish Voice for Peace Deputy Director:
In President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Steve Bannon–a leading white nationalist–as Chief Strategist, we are seeing a confirmation of exactly what Trump promised throughout his campaign: the open endorsement of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and antisemitism. From our work on Israel, we are familiar with the deepening violence, hatred and repression that comes from a far right government. We can not sit by and watch that take place here–this is not a time for business as usual. People and organizations should refuse to cooperate with policies by the Trump Administration that are racist, sexist, Islamophobic, anti-semitic, and/or infringe on civil liberties. As Jewish Voice for Peace, our response is to deepen our commitment to organizing a grassroots movement that will ensure all people’s rights and safety are protected.
People for the American Way
Today, People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement condemning Trump’s selection of white supremacist and anti-Semite for a White House post:
“By choosing Steve Bannon as chief strategist, Trump has made clear that he intends to carry the racism and anti-Semitism of his campaign straight into the White House. The website Bannon ran is a home for the White Nationalist Right that elevates racist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic tirades and conspiracy theories.
“Congressional Republicans need to stand up and call out Trump for choosing Bannon as a senior adviser and ‘equal partner’ to Trump’s Chief of Staff. This isn’t about partisan politics; no one with Bannon’s record should be anywhere near the White House.”
The New Republic weighs in
Steve Bannon is absolutely culpable for Breitbart’s racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism.Newt Gingrich tried to argue otherwise on Monday, telling Fox & Friends it’s “baloney” to fault President-elect Donald Trump’s “chief strategist” for stories published under his tenure as executive chairman of the news outlet, including “Bill Kristol: Republican Spoiler, Renegade Jew” and “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy.”
The site continues to devote a special section to “Black Crime,” but Gingrich, a member of Trump’s transition team who may well be the next secretary of state, holds Bannon blameless:
They now want to come back and say that anything that anybody ever published in Breitbart is Steve Bannon. That’s baloney. That would be like accusing the publisher of The New York Times of being responsible for the dumbest thing his newspaper ever did, which would be a lot of things, by the way.
In fact, the publisher of The New York Times is responsible for everything that appears in the newspaper, and if he were headed to the West Wing his work would be scrutinized, too.
Bannon deserves extra scrutiny, given how his former employees describe him. Conservative writer Ben Shapiro, who resigned from the site in March, said in a statement that “Bannon is a bully, and has sold out [Andrew Breitbart’s] mission in order to back another bully, Donald Trump; he has shaped the company into Trump’s personal Pravda.”
When Jarrett Stepman resigned as associate editor in March, he said, “I believe Breitbart News is becoming less of a news site and more of a propaganda organization dedicated to the Trump campaign. Breitbart News has also now openly embraced the ‘Nationalist/Populist’ viewpoint, which is in direct opposition to limited-government conservatism that channels the philosophy of the Founding Fathers.”
